Buzzing

As I was recording the ambient Beineman sounds (see Cartrain) I was struck by the buzzing of the transformer across the road. So I went to investigate.

Under the Bridge

I crawled under the Bridge St. bridge and recorded some ambiance. Listen carefully for the sounds of traffic above the bridge over the sound of the river and the way they change the sound behavior.

Skatepark Tarp

This is a sound I recorded during the time I spent wandering the skatepark. Next to the chainlink fence was a semi with a large tarp covering the cab. I put my mics inside the tarp and listened to the wind whip it around.

Car/Train

I was recording ambient noise on a bridge out of town (Do you sense a pattern here?) A car drove by while I was recording, and simultaneously a train in the distance let off its horn. I kept recording as the train chugged into the distance.

Bridge Street Train

As I was recording sounds in the bridge street gazebo, I heard the bells of the train crossing across the street. I ran over to record the sound, which was very harsh and loud.

Here's the clip:

For my first venture into the world of recorded sound I chose the familiar turf of my hometown: Burlington, WI. Armed with a sense of familiarity and a pair of hand crafted microphones, I walked the streets hoping to find somethings I wasn't familiar with. My strategy was a simple right-left, which meant I started turning right and then went left at the next intersection. I began at the corner of Pine and State, two busy streets downtown, at 7:30 on a Sunday Morning. The sounds of the city waking up fascinated me as I walked, but don't take my word for it.

Preliminaries

This is the first post to my new blog just to test things out and handle introductions. My name is Zach Erdmann and I am a media artist currently living in Milwaukee, WI. This blog is a posting of the results of my first project in a new area (for me at least) of media exploration. You can find more information about the projects and my research leading up to them here: Research Blog.

Thanks for checking out my work and stay tuned for the good stuff.
